The phenomenon of Black Panther has hit and hit hard. People rushed to the box office to grab a piece of Marvel’s reappearance of the Black Panther. This Marvel character was born in July of 1966, first appearing in Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966) in the Silver Age of Comic Books. Black Panther’s real name is T’Challa, king, and protector of the fictional African nation called Wakanda. Along with possessing enhanced abilities achieved through ancient Wakandan rituals of drinking the heart-shaped herb, T’Challa also relies on his proficiency in science, rigorous physical training, hand-to-hand combat skills, and access to wealth and advanced technology to combat his enemies.
What is it about this movie that has African Americans, black people so in love and singing praises to the creator and the cast. I must admit my initial reaction was not in-line with the masses. As a matter of fact, I am still not in love, however, I do understand the love and support the love.
A movie such as this which seems to have such power should be the catalyst to unify us as a people and bring forth positive change. I liked seeing my people on the big screen depicted in a positive light, intelligent, ahead of technology, and saving the world which is unlike the usual shuck and jive, shoot em up bang bang, my people as drug dealers, prostitutes and of course the ole familiar slavey type movies. If nothing else this movie shows that Hollywood can do better. Our dollar showed up and showed out. With that said we have to keep the momentum going and insist that Hollywood continues to do better. We should only support that which shows us in a positive light. There are negative people in every race from every background, however, the black race has the negativity over-represented. For those movies that do not depict us positively, we should not spend another dollar. We have seen enough.
How do we take these fictitious characters and all the positive they represent to transcend into our reality and daily life? We need to continue motivating and operating in unity. We need to keep the mindset that urged the masses to go see this film to unify us for other important events. Events such as volunteering, voting, donating to the less fortunate youth on a larger scale.
